Suncor seeks approval for new oilsands operation

Suncor Energy Inc. has proposed a new oilsands operation that would stretch across 25 square kilometres northeast of Fort McMurray.

The major oil and gas company says the Lewis project would produce up to 160,000 barrels of oil per day for 25 to 40 years.

Suncor said it's in the early stages of seeking approvals from the Alberta Energy Regulator, but the company has not formally sanctioned the project.

Construction at Lewis could begin in 2024 with first steam expected in 2027, the company says in a new webpage on the project.

The project would involve pumping steam into a well, heating the sticky bitumen and allowing it to flow by gravity to a second parallel well, which would pump the oil to the surface for processing.

Suncor promises "open and transparent" consultation, and vows nearby communities could benefit from the project through new jobs, greater economic growth, new government revenue, education and training, and community investment.

The company said it's "aggressively" pursuing technologies that reduce carbon pollution from steam-assisted oilsands projects and would incorporate the latest methods into the Lewis project, if approved.
