Police investigate toddler death at 155 Avenue and Castle Downs Road

The suspicious death of a male toddler near 155 Avenue and Castle Downs Road was under investigation Friday by the Edmonton Police Service.

Police asked for the public’s assistance to identify “specific articles of clothing belonging to the toddler,” police said in a news release.

The toddler was found around 2:30 p.m. near the Good Shepherd Anglican Church. An autopsy is pending.

The clothing includes a black and grey shoe with fluorescent green laces and blue stripes, a batman T-shirt and a blue snowsuit that says U.S. Polo Assn and USPA U.S. Polo Assn.

About eight police vehicles were parked in the area at 15499 Castle Downs Rd. on Friday afternoon.

Yellow police tape and orange traffic cones blocked off the parking lot at Good Shepherd Anglican Church. A nearby paved walking and cycling trail was also blocked.

A forensic officer wearing blue gloves collected evidence in a brown paper bag from within a black-and-yellow tent beside the church and a nearby shed, behind a sign for Beaumaris on the Lake.

The medical examiner’s office arrived on scene and took away the body before 7 p.m.

One person carried the toddler’s tiny body beneath a white sheet and took the remains in a silver medical examiner office van.

Fire Rescue Services members wearing purple gloves took down the tent.

If the death is confirmed as a homicide, it would be Edmonton’s 15th of the year.
