RCMP in Red Deer say the body of a 39-year-old male and a six-year-old girl were found inside a home in the Lancaster neighbourhood Sunday afternoon.
In a news release Monday, Mounties said the father and daughter were found about 3:30 p.m. during a welfare check. RCMP gained entry into a secure residence and found the bodies inside.
RCMP say the names of the victims are not being released at this time.
"Initial investigation suggests that there is no threat to the public," Mounties said.
The girl's school has been notified and counsellors are being arranged for any affected teachers and students, they added.
“On behalf of the RCMP, I want to express our most sincere condolences to the family and friends of the deceased, “ Supt. Ken Foster said. "This is a tragic loss that affects our whole community."
Police say they will be working with the medical examiner's officer to determine cause of death for the father and daughter. An autopsy is scheduled to take place Tuesday morning.
More to come.
