Flowers left near where toddler found dead in north Edmonton

Three yellow tulips laid at the entrance of a church in north Edmonton on Saturday appeared to be a lonely tribute to a toddler found dead a day earlier in the area near 155 Avenue and Castle Downs Road.

A passerby made the grisly discovery at around 2:30 p.m Friday near the Good Shepherd Anglican Church and police spent the rest of the afternoon and evening collecting evidence from the scene.

Police estimate the boy’s age at about 20 months, but he could be older.

An autopsy is pending but late Friday night, police held a press conference asking for the public’s assistance to identify “specific articles of clothing belonging to the toddler” and said the clothing was found on the scene.

“Ultimately, identifying the toddler will help us figure out the circumstances as to what lead to his unfortunate death,” Staff Sgt. Duane Hunter told a news conference late Friday at police headquarters.

“Someone out there is missing this little boy. We need assistance not only to identify him, but to identify his family and the people around him to help us put together the events that lead to this.”

No one from the church would speak about the incident Saturday instead directing all enquiries to the Edmonton Police Service.

Edmonton city police are continuing to investigate the child’s death.

If the death is confirmed as a homicide, it would be Edmonton’s 15th of the year.
