Wildrose, Progressive Conservatives to announce unity agreement

The Wildrose Party and Progressive Conservatives are expected to announce a unity agreement today.

The committee that has been negotiating a possible merger of the two parties has scheduled a news conference at 1 p.m. today in Edmonton.

The panel has been discussing the issues involved in a unified party since March, shortly after Jason Kenney won the PC leadership contest.

In a recent Postmedia/Mainstreet research poll, the WildroseParty came in first among leaning and decided voters with 37 per cent support.

The PCs were second at 29 per cent followed by the ruling Albverta NDP at 23 per cent.

Any deal would still have to be approved by a majority of members in both parties.

The Wildrose has previously said it will need 75 per cent or more of its members to OK the deal while the Progressive Conservatives say they will require a simple majority of 50 per cent plus one.

Representatives from both parties have been meeting for the last two months to hammer out a deal.

Kenney won the PC party leadership in March on a platform to merge and both Kenney and Jean have said they’ll run for the leadership of a consolidated party.

More to come.
