Grande Prairie RCMP drug unit cracking down, seizing fentanyl

A specialized RCMP drug unit in Grande Prairie is having some success in the battle against fentanyl, says the officer in charge.

Cpl. Eldon Chillog, who supervises the five-man unit established in the fall, told County of Grande Prairie councillors this week that his team has made several big fentanyl busts over the last six months or so.

In November the team wrapped up one of the biggest cases, a drug trafficking investigation that resulted in the arrest of “one of the top fentanyl suppliers in the city bringing those pills in,” said Chillog, showing councillors a photograph of thousands of fentanyl pills and a gun seized after searching a Countryside South home. Abdulmalik Hassen, facing multiple drug and firearms charges, has a trial date of Oct. 10 in Grande Prairie.

Chillog said the drug unit tends to work on in-depth, longer term investigations, adding that fentanyl dealers are very careful lately because they know police are cracking down.

In another smaller investigation, officers targeted a young mother who had smaller amounts of fentanyl. Chillog said police went after her because she had an infant. The hope is the arrest will shock her into changing her behaviour, he said.

“Let’s say a young lady, 17, 18, 19 years of age has a young child but has an addiction as well,” he said. “That’s something we would target, and we do so for a good reason. At the end of the day, that ‘stop’ for this particular person might change the way she goes about her life.”

Chillog said he has a “checklist” to determine who to target for drug investigations.

“Are they affecting the community? Are they out with guns? Are they actively being violent? There’s a whole bunch of different variables that we would look at as a unit to determine our target … If somebody is selling to young people that would be a check mark. If they’re being violent that would be another check mark.”

Since the unit began operations, it has carried out a few larger drug busts and three or four smaller ones in total, said Chillog.
