Siksika Nation chief and councillors will undergo voluntary drug test

Siksika chief and 12 councillors will undergo voluntary drug test

Siksika's chief and council have announced an extraordinary step in dealing with the flow of illicit drugs onto the reserve east of Calgary.

Band administration announced this week that Chief Joseph Weasel Child, and each of the 12 councillors, have agreed to voluntarily undergo a drug test on April 24.

"Doing the drug testing at the leadership level, this is showing true leadership to the community," said Coun. Marsha Wolf Collar in a release.

"If we, as leaders are going to impose drug testing, we need to be examples by participating in the drug testing."

Chief and council are hoping their decision prompts other departments within the band's administration to voluntarily submit to testing.

The announcement was made following the formation of a crime prevention task force earlier this month to tackle an increase in illegal drug activity and violence on Siksika.

The task force, which includes Siksika members, RCMP, Siksika social services and EMS, are considering a number of new policies and bylaws aimed at preventing

further criminal activity, including the possible eviction or banishment of offending members.
