Alberta Parks issues warning for cougar in Fish Creek Park

Alberta Parks are warning park-goers of a cougar in Fish Creek Provincial Park.

An advisory released Saturday cautions those taking advantage of the Bebo Grove Day Use area in Fish Creek Park to watch out for a cougar in the area.

With ample tree coverage and lots of green space to roam through, it's not surprising to hear of cougars in the park. The most recent cougar sighting in Calgary was back in January, when a large cat decided to relax on the patio of a home in Heritage Point, which is located about 20 minutes south of Fish Creek.

Cougars are typically shy, but Alberta Parks advises those utilizing areas like Bebo Grove to keep children close and always have dogs on a leash.

If you encounter a cougar, Alberta Parks officials advise the following:

  • Always leave room for the cougar to escape
  • Do not run
  • Do not turn your back on the cougar
  • Back away slowly
  • Make yourself appear as large as possible. Open your jacket if wearing one
  • Maintain eye contact with the cougar (this helps convince the cougar you are not prey, and may be a threat)
  • If a cougar attacks, fight back with anything at hand

Any cougar sightings can be reported to Kananaskis Country Emergency Services at 403-591-7755. For more information or safety tips, visit the Alberta Parks Safety Around Wildlife page online.
