Man pulls 'machete-type knife' on off-duty police officer out for a jog in Spruce Grove

RCMP have laid charges after a man brandishing a large knife tried to attack an off-duty police officer, his fiancee and their dog during an evening jog in Spruce Grove.

The joggers were on a trail system at a local park around 6 p.m. on April 4 when they passed two unknown men sitting on a bench, police said in a Thursday news release.

One of the men engaged in a verbal argument with the officer and his fiancee before challenging the officer to a fight.

The man pulled out a “large machete-type knife” and made death threats toward the officer and his dog, police said. The couple ran away, calling 911 before two men were arrested.

The joggers and their dog did not suffer any injuries.

Coulton Lee Blenkhorn, 27, of Spruce Grove is charged with assault with a weapon, possession of a weapon, uttering threats and possession of marijuana. Eric Brian Van de Vrie, 26, of Spruce Grove is charged with assault with a weapon.
